RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Natuna Museum in the Riau Islands is a public institution that features fascinating artifacts, including items recovered from an ancient shipwreck. Officially opened in July 2023, the museum serves as a cultural home at the northern border of Indonesia.
Inside, visitors can discover a rich collection of ancient Chinese ceramics dating all the way from the 9th to the 19th century. These valuable items were discovered at archaeological sites on land and underwater around Natuna.
The museum building itself was constructed through a joint effort by local and national governments between 2016 and 2020. Managed by the local education and culture department, it is designed to protect and showcase the region's long history.
Its main vision is to act as a center of civilization that highlights Natuna's strategic maritime position. Students and researchers can explore these exhibits to better understand early trade and navigation.
The museum's mission focuses on protecting historical items and offering educational programs for the public. Through engaging displays, it helps young people learn about local traditions and cultural heritage.
The exhibits illustrate Natuna’s historical role in maritime trade and cultural exchange. Every artifact helps bring the maritime history of Indonesia's outer islands to life.
Today, the museum continues to serve as an important learning hub for both locals and tourists. It stands proudly as a safe space for preserving the unique identity of the Natuna community.
