RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Rumah Adat Nan Baanjuang Museum started as a Minangkabau traditional house before transforming into an official public cultural museum in West Sumatra. Located in Bukittinggi, this unique museum serves as a primary guardian and showcase for the rich heritage and history of the Minangkabau people.

Originally constructed on July 1, 1935, by a Dutch official named Mondelar Countrolleur, the building features authentic traditional architecture within the Kinantan wildlife and cultural park. This iconic structure preserves classic Minangkabau design elements, including palm-fiber roofs, intricate wooden walls, and distinctive side pavilions known as anjuang.

Classified as a Type C general museum, the institution is officially registered under the National Museum Registration System and the broader Indonesian Museum network. It operates as a vital regional educational resource dedicated to preserving and exhibiting local cultural artifacts.

The museum is proudly owned by the Bukittinggi City Government and professionally managed under the local Department of Education and Culture. This municipal oversight ensures the continuous maintenance of the building, its collections, and public educational programs.

Housing approximately 600 diverse collection items, the museum exhibits traditional miniautres, ceremonial clothing, jewelry, and household tools. These artifacts collectively illustrate the daily life, traditional livelihoods, arts, and martial arts of the historical Minangkabau society.

The core vision of the museum is to serve as a comprehensive treasury for Minangkabau customs, heritage, and traditional values. Its mission focuses on functioning as a leading documentation center, research reference, and educational destination for future generations.

Through its rich historical exhibits and preserved architecture, the museum remains a major cultural tourism destination in West Sumatra. It continues to bridge past traditions with modern educational outreach, fostering a deep appreciation for regional identity.
