RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Pusaka Karo Museum successfully showcases the rich cultural heritage and traditional identity of the Karo people in North Sumatra. Located in Karo Regency, this public museum serves as an essential educational and historical recreational hub for visitors.

Classified as a Type C general museum, the facility gathers, preserves, and displays diverse ethnographic collections belonging to the Karo community. These exhibits provide a comprehensive learning platform for students, researchers, and tourists eager to understand local customs and history.

The museum is owned by the Archdiocese of Medan and managed professionally by the Pusaka Karo Foundation based in Berastagi. This collaborative management actively involves the local community to ensure the sustainable preservation of regional heritage.

The institution was originally conceptualized by a dedicated Dutch missionary named Father Leonardus Joosten Edigius, widely known as Pastor Leo Joosten. Driven by a passion to safeguard local traditions, he laid the groundwork for a museum that would protect Karo culture from fading away.

It was officially inaugurated on February 9, 2013, by the Director-General of Arts and Cultural Creative Economy alongside the Archbishop of Medan. Since its opening, the museum has continuously grown as a public space dedicated to preserving indigenous historical artifacts.

Housing around 70 unique ethnographic items—mostly acquired through public donations and loans—the museum features traditional household and ritual objects. Notable artifacts include traditional vessels, ancient axes, woven baskets, and traditional tools that represent past ways of life.

Open to visitors throughout the week with affordable admission fees, the museum remains a vital destination for cultural preservation. Through its professional administration, it strengthens national cultural identity and deepens public appreciation for Karo heritage.
