Padang Station: Main Gateway to West Sumatra's Railway

RRI.CO.ID, Padang – Padang Station is a major railway station in Padang, the capital of West Sumatra, operated by the state-owned railway company Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI). Located in the Simpang Haru area of the city, the station is part of West Sumatra's railway network, whose history is closely connected with the development of transportation and mining in the province.

The origins of Padang's railway system date back to the late 19th century, when the Dutch colonial railway company Staatsspoorwegen ter Sumatra's Westkust (SSS) built railways to connect the west coast of Sumatra with the coal-producing areas in Sawahlunto. Padang Station itself was inaugurated on October 1, 1892, as part of the railway connection to Emmahaven (now Port of Teluk Bayur).

The railway development was strongly driven by the transportation of coal from the Ombilin mine near Sawahlunto to the coast, where it could be shipped through the port at Teluk Bayur. This required an extensive railway network across West Sumatra's challenging landscape of hills and valleys, including sections equipped with cog rails to help trains negotiate steep gradients.

Today, Padang Station continues to serve passenger trains operated by KAI, although the railway network is much smaller than it was during the colonial period. Among the services associated with the station is Pariaman Ekspres, which connects Padang with Pariaman in the north.

Another service is Minangkabau Ekspres, an airport train with terminus at Minangkabau International Airport in Padang Pariaman Regency, north of Padang. It also connects to Pulau Aie Station, near Padang's historic old town.

Padang Station also served by the Lembah Anai rail bus northbound to Kayu Tanam, also in Padang Pariaman Regency. With these services, Padang Station could be a main gateway to explore the beauty of West Sumatra.

Located eight meters above sea level, the station has three platforms and seven tracks used for passenger as well as freight transport. A Trans Padang bus rapid transit stop is available nearby.
