RRI.CO.ID, Magelang - Borobudur Temple stands as one of Indonesia's most significant Buddhist heritage sites, known for its monumental architecture, intricate reliefs, and spiritual symbolism. Located in Magelang Regency, Central Java, the temple dates from the eighth to ninth centuries.

The monument was built during the Sailendra Dynasty and served as a Buddhist religious site before eventually being abandoned. In 1991, UNESCO inscribed Borobudur, along with Mendut and Pawon temples, as a World Heritage site.

Borobudur features a distinctive structure consisting of square terraces, three circular platforms, and a large central stupa at the summit. The monument's walls and balustrades are decorated with extensive reliefs covering approximately 2,500 square meters.

The temple contains 2,672 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues throughout its main complex. The reliefs depict various Buddhist teachings and stories, including scenes from the Karmawibhangga, Lalitavistara, Jataka-Avadana, and Gandavyuha narratives.

The upper platforms feature 72 perforated stupas arranged around the central stupa. Each of these smaller stupas contains a Buddha statue, creating a distinctive pattern across the temple's upper levels.

The overall design of Borobudur reflects Buddhist cosmology through three symbolic realms: Kamadhatu, Rupadhatu, and Arupadhatu. The progression from the lower section toward the summit represents a spiritual journey toward enlightenment and liberation.

Borobudur also forms part of a wider cultural landscape with Mendut and Pawon temples. The three monuments are positioned along an imaginary straight axis, reflecting their historical and cultural connections.

Beyond its religious and historical significance, Borobudur has become one of Central Java's most recognized cultural tourism destinations. Its architecture and reliefs continue attracting visitors interested in Indonesia's ancient history, Buddhist heritage, and traditional craftsmanship.

Located about 40 kilometers northwest of Yogyakarta, Borobudur can be reached by land from the city. Visitors should check the latest visiting schedules, access regulations, visitor quotas, and ticket information before planning their trip.
