RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Geopolitical tensions and global economic uncertainty are shifting the holiday preferences of Indonesia’s affluent travelers toward domestic destinations. The trend is being leveraged by the Ministry of Tourism to strengthen the offering of world-class tourism products in Indonesia that emphasize privacy, comfort, and exclusive experiences.
The ministry organized a Luxury Business Networking event to help businesses expand their market access and identify opportunities for partnerships in the premium tourism sector. The initiative targets Indonesians who have traditionally preferred to take their holidays overseas.
“We want to ensure that Indonesian consumers’ spending continues to circulate domestically through world-class premium tourism products,” said Deputy Minister for Marketing at the Tourism Ministry, Ni Made Ayu Marthini, in a ministry press statement confirmed in Jakarta on Tuesday, August 18, 2026.
She said geopolitical developments and global economic uncertainty had influenced travelers’ decisions, including those of Indonesian tourists, when planning trips abroad. According to Made, the situation presents an opportunity for national tourism businesses to offer premium services at destinations across Indonesia to domestic travelers.
As reported by Antara, the government recorded up to 1.20 billion domestic tourist trips throughout 2025, representing a 17.53 percent increase from the previous year. The growth continued during the first half of 2026, when the government recorded 630.41 million domestic tourist trips, an increase of 2.71 percent compared with the same period a year earlier.
According to Made, the rising number of domestic trips creates opportunities to market a wider range of tourism products and experiences, including high-quality travel service packages. These packages offer comfort, privacy, unique experiences, and personalized destination options.
The ministry facilitated meetings between premium tourism businesses, prospective partners, and decision-makers responsible for travel arrangements for affluent clients. The initiative was intended to encourage growth in Indonesia’s domestic premium tourism market.
At the Luxury Business Networking event organized by the ministry, 11 premium tourism service providers were introduced to at least 25 potential buyers. The premium tourism providers offered the potential buyers travel products and packages valued at more than IDR 15 million (USD 839.26) per person.
Made expressed hope that providing more premium tourism options domestically would encourage more domestic travelers to enjoy high-quality tourism experiences in Indonesia. The expansion of the domestic premium tourism market is also expected to generate greater economic benefits for businesses and communities in destinations across Indonesia. ***
