RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Ministry of Tourism is shifting its market penetration focus in Australia from mere quantity to high-quality tourism. Through the “Go Beyond Ordinary” campaign in Sydney and Melbourne, the government is encouraging longer stays and higher spending by tourists from the Land of the Kangaroo by offering special tourism packages, such as gastronomy, wellness, and marine tourism.
“We want to present more diverse and quality tourism experiences so that Australian tourists explore more destinations in Indonesia, not only Bali and Jakarta,” said Deputy for Marketing at the Ministry of Tourism, Ni Made Ayu Marthini, in an official statement confirmed in Jakarta on Saturday, 15 August 2026.
She said Australia is one of Indonesia’s main tourism markets. Australia’s position as a strategic market is underpinned by geographic proximity, flight connectivity, and bilateral relations between the two countries.
According to data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), Australia was the second-largest source of foreign tourist arrivals to Indonesia in 2025, recording 1,754,791 visits. This upward trend continued into June 2026, with Australian visits reaching 864,750, a 6.29 percent increase compared to the same period the previous year.
As reported by Antara, the Ministry of Tourism has set a target of 2.23 million visits from Australian tourists this year. To sustain this growth trend, the Go Beyond Ordinary campaign was held through a series of sales missions in Australia. The activities took place at Rydges World Square, Sydney, on 5 August 2026, and continued at Oaks Melbourne on Market Hotel, Melbourne, on 6 August 2026.
The events brought together Indonesia’s tourism industry with Australian travel industry players to expand tourism packages and transaction opportunities to various destinations across Indonesia. The event offered quality tourism experiences, ranging from nature, culture, and marine tourism to gastronomy and wellness.
It is hoped that tourists will extend their trips to more key destinations to increase the economic benefits of tourism for local regions. These efforts are expected not only to increase the number of visits but also to lengthen stays, boost tourist spending, and strengthen the competitiveness of Indonesian tourism.
In the sales mission, the Ministry of Tourism collaborated with tourism associations, the Indonesian Consulate General (KJRI) in Sydney and the KJRI in Melbourne, Garuda Indonesia in Sydney and Melbourne, and Melbourne Airport. This collaboration was directed at directly connecting Indonesia’s tourism industry with potential partners in Australia.
“The Wonderful Indonesia Sales Mission in Sydney and Melbourne yielded strong results by securing potential visits from 3,050 tourists. This initiative is projected to generate up to IDR 78 billion (USD 4.4 million) in foreign exchange earnings,” said Made. ***
