  • BRIN is developing the N219 ecosystem, including the amphibious N219A, to support medical evacuations and health logistics in remote and archipelagic regions.

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto’s “flying ambulance” vision is being supported through the development of the N219 aircraft.

The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is preparing the operational ecosystem for the N219 and its amphibious variant, the N219A, to facilitate medical evacuations and the distribution of health logistics in remote and archipelagic regions.

“This development is part of an effort to leverage national aerospace technology to address healthcare needs in hard‑to‑reach areas. We are refining the ecosystem for the N219 aircraft and its amphibious variant (N219A),” BRIN Head Arif Satria said in Jakarta on Sunday, August 16, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

PT Dirgantara Indonesia’s N219 “Nurtanio” is a twin‑engine, multi‑purpose aircraft designed for regional travel and to meet Indonesia’s need for innovative air transport, particularly in areas with limited accessibility.

One of the N219’s key advantages is its short takeoff and landing (STOL) capability, enabling the aircraft to operate from short runways and support connectivity in remote regions.

The development of the N219A aims to expand the aircraft’s operational capabilities. With its ability to land on water, the amphibious variant is expected to support medical evacuations in archipelagic areas with limited access to healthcare facilities.

The N219 program aligns with the government’s air ambulance initiative, which aims to accelerate medical evacuations, especially from regions with limited transportation options.

President Prabowo previously noted that some citizens still need to travel seven to nine hours to access healthcare, a situation that is particularly challenging for women in labor.

During the presentation of the Government’s statement on the 2027 State Budget Bill and its accompanying Financial Note on Friday, August 14, 2026, President Prabowo said, “To address this, we will create an air ambulance service using helicopters and small aircraft capable of landing on grass fields, sandy areas, and riverbanks, ensuring that no citizen goes without evacuation when ill.”

In addition to the N219 and N219A, BRIN is also developing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology as part of the national aerospace ecosystem.

Arif said BRIN is developing a Medium‑Altitude Long‑Endurance (MALE) UAV capable of flying for up to 24 hours non‑stop, with a Beyond Line of Sight (BLOS) control range of approximately 2,000 kilometers.

“This long‑range unmanned platform provides an autonomous and reliable system for various critical missions, from tactical surveillance to future emergency logistics deployment,” he said.

The development of these platforms is expected to strengthen national aerospace capabilities while opening opportunities for their use in healthcare services, emergency response, and logistics distribution to areas that are difficult to access by land or sea. ***
