Indonesia, South Korea Cooperate in Smart Greenhouses

RRI.CO.ID, South Tangerang - Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) strengthen agricultural cooperation through the development of Smart Greenhouse technology. This technology uses South Korea’s smart farming technology and will be adapted to Indonesia’s tropical climate and agricultural conditions.

The collaboration was discussed at the BRIN-KIST ODA International Seminar, themed “International Joint Cooperation and Future Partnership: Strengthening Indonesia-Korea Collaboration in Smart Greenhouse Technology, Research, and Innovation,” in South Tangerang, Banten, on Thursday, August 13, 2026. Head of BRIN’s Research Center for Sustainable Industrial and Manufacturing Systems, Nugroho Adi Sasongko, said the Smart Greenhouse project is designed to facilitate the transfer and localization of South Korean smart farming technology for use in Indonesia.

“The Smart Greenhouse integrates environmental sensors, the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), automated fertigation, environmental control, and data-based crop management to improve productivity, product quality, resource efficiency, and sustainability,” Nugroho said, quoted from the press release on Wednesday, August 12, 2026.

He said the international seminar serves as a platform to disseminate the project’s achievements, discuss technology transfer and localization strategies, and strengthen innovation and intellectual property management. It also aims to formulate the future direction of Indonesia-South Korea cooperation in smart agriculture, advanced manufacturing, and sustainable food systems.

“These three areas are strategic sectors that play an important role in supporting sustainable development. Through the utilization of science, technology, and innovation, they are expected to improve national productivity, competitiveness, and food security,” Nugroho said.

Meanwhile, Head of BRIN’s Research Organization for Energy and Manufacturing, Cuk Supriyadi Ali Nandar, said the collaboration is part of efforts to promote technological innovation and the development of sustainable industrial systems in Indonesia. He emphasized that the successful development and utilization of the technology would require cross-sectoral support involving the government, academia, and private sector.

“With support from the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), relevant ministries, academia, and the private sector, this facility is expected to accelerate the transfer of precision agriculture technology and support Indonesia’s food security amid the challenges of global climate change,” Cuk said.

Meanwhile, Dudi Iskandar, Head of the Industrial Sustainability and Product Optimization Research Group at BRIN, said intellectual property protection and management are also key priorities of the collaboration.

“With the involvement of the Korea Invention Promotion Association (KIPA), researchers from both countries are being trained to manage joint patents, licensing, and technology commercialization so that the innovations generated can create tangible and sustainable economic impact,” Dudi said.

The seminar featured KIST researcher Lee Ju Young, Bappenas Director of Food and Agriculture Jarot Indarto, and Dudi Iskandar as speakers. BRIN expects the cooperation to strengthen operational capacity, produce concrete recommendations and agreed follow-up actions, and establish a stronger foundation for long-term Indonesia-South Korea partnerships in sustainable agricultural development and innovation.
