RRI.CO.ID, South Tangerang - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) of Indonesia hosted a delegation from China's Hunan University of Chinese Medicine (HUCM) at the B.J. Habibie Science and Technology Park in Serpong, South Tangerang, Banten, on Thursday, August 27, 2026, to explore joint research opportunities in traditional medicine, pharmaceuticals, and natural resource utilization.
Head of BRIN's Research Center for Pharmaceutical Raw Materials and Traditional Medicine (PRBBOOT) Sofa Fajriah highlighted that both Indonesia and China possess rich biodiversity and deep historical roots in traditional healing, providing a strong foundation for modern evidence-based drug development.
The proposed collaboration encompasses joint studies on Indonesian medicinal plants, comparative research between Indonesian and Chinese natural remedies, bioactive compound isolation, and capacity-building through researcher and student exchanges. The Chinese delegation also extended access to HUCM's laboratory facilities to support ethnopharmacological studies, chemical analysis, and industrial commercialization.
Research leaders from both institutions emphasized that combining Indonesia's biological resources with advanced technological screening will accelerate the commercialization of herbal medicine globally. Sofa Fajriah underscored the strategic value of cross-border scientific partnerships.
"Indonesia and China share long histories in traditional medicine alongside biodiversity and scientific expertise that can serve as the foundation for modern natural drug development, collaboration with HUCM can be directed toward joint research on Indonesian medicinal plants, comparative studies, bioactive compound discovery, analytical method development, and pharmacological studies," she said in Serpong on Thursday, August 27, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
Dean of the School of Pharmacy at HUCM Wang Wei invited Indonesian scientists to leverage shared laboratory capabilities to bridge basic research with industrial applications.
"Indonesia can lead exploration and supply rich natural resources, while collaboration with laboratories in China can support further technological development and global outreach, medicinal plant development can progress through compound identification, active compound screening, synthetic approaches, and genomic studies to ensure research leads directly to commercial pharmaceutical products," Wang Wei added. ***
