Government Introduces Six Water Technologies to Address Climate Change

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) introduced six innovative technologies to strengthen Indonesia's national water security. This step follows up on President Prabowo Subianto's directive to BRIN to enhance the provision of water technologies to address the impacts of climate change.
The Head of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Arif Satria, emphasized in Jakarta on Thursday, 23 July 2026, that the sustainability of the nation's civilization depends heavily on self-reliance in managing water resources. He stated that climate change has increased the risk of drought, flooding, and uncertainty about water distribution in various regions of Indonesia.
He explained that water management can no longer rely solely on conventional infrastructure but needs to be supported by scientific research and innovation. "The technology presented by BRIN combines the excellence of basic science with practical applications to ensure that every drop of water, whether from clouds, rock crevices, or the ocean, can be optimized for the public welfare. This is the concrete manifestation of a Water Resilient Indonesia towards Indonesia Emas 2045," Arif said.
The six technologies introduced include Weather Modification Technology (TMC), offshore karst and freshwater speleology exploration, and the use of nuclear technology to track groundwater isotopes. Additionally, IoT-based seawater desalination, ARSINUM technology for marginal water treatment, and daily conservation in the form of rainwater harvesting and ablution water treatment plants are also available.
Weather Modification Technology works by seeding chemical agents into clouds via aircraft, drones, rockets, and ground generators to increase rainfall. This technology serves to measurably replenish reservoirs, lakes, ponds, and groundwater reserves.
Meanwhile, BRIN is also developing a surface Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) device worth IDR 15.8 billion to detect groundwater potential down to a depth of 180 meters without test drilling. Seawater desalination technology is also being developed for coastal areas and small islands, with capacities ranging from 5,000 to over 20,000 liters per day.
Ready-to-Drink Water technology has proven its role as a disaster response fleet providing clean water after a disaster. This mobile unit has been deployed during the Aceh floods, the Palu liquefaction, the Lombok earthquake, and the Greater Jakarta floods.
Through this series of innovations, BRIN affirms its commitment to building an adaptive, science-based water management system, rather than a reactive one. This step is expected to ensure water availability for the community while supporting the vision of Indonesia Emas 2045.
