RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Minister of Youth and Sports, Erick Thohir has called for stronger synergy among ministries and government institutions to develop Indonesia’s sports industry and sport tourism. He said sport tourism has significant potential to contribute to the national economy.

The statement was made during the kick-off of the drafting of the Grand Design for Sports Industry Development, held alongside the launch of the book The Impact of MotoGP Mandalika at the BSM Room of Bappenas in Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday, September 30, 2026.

The event was symbolically marked by the raising of a racing flag by Erick, Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Cultural Affairs Pratikno, Minister of National Development Planning/Head of Bappenas Rachmat Pambudy, and Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana.

“As the Youth and Sports Minister, and together with Minister Widi as the Tourism Minister, we are truly working in synergy on the development of sport tourism, without any hidden agenda or other interests. We have one mission, which is to support the President’s vision,” Erick said.

According to Erick, developing the sports industry is part of efforts to support President Prabowo Subianto’s target of achieving eight percent economic growth. He said Indonesia needs to explore the potential of sports through coordinated programs that can generate economic benefits.

He also highlighted the importance of building an ecosystem involving relevant ministries and institutions to support the development of the sports industry and sport tourism. He cited MotoGP in Indonesia as an example, saying the event had generated an economic impact of nearly 5 trillion rupiahs, with a target of 145,000 visitors this year.

“An event should not simply grow on its own without encompassing the activities of local communities. This is so that people can see how the event can truly become an impactful program for the region,” he explained.

The kick-off was also accompanied by a talk show titled “Directions for Developing the Sports Industry and Sport Tourism Ecosystem,” featuring several speakers, including Teuku Arlan Perkasa Lukman, Deputy for Sports Industry Development at the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Erick expressed hope that stronger synergy among ministries and government institutions would expand the economic and social benefits of Indonesia’s sports industry and sport tourism.
