Growing Presence of Pencak Silat in the United States Fuels Olympic Ambitions

Speaking after the 3rd United States Pencak Silat Championship held in Herndon, Virginia, on September 26, 2026, Ambassador Indroyono said the sport has significant potential to expand internationally while maintaining its cultural identity.

“Pencak silat has the opportunity to continue growing and eventually reach the Olympic stage. President Prabowo Subianto has expressed support for pencak silat to one day be contested at the Olympic Games,” Ambassador Indroyono said in a statement released by the Indonesian Embassy in Washington on Monday, September 28, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

According to the ambassador, achieving that goal ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics will require patience, persistence, and collaboration among stakeholders, while preserving the values and traditions that define pencak silat as an Indonesian cultural heritage.

The championship in Virginia brought together practitioners from diverse backgrounds and highlighted how the martial art has expanded far beyond its country of origin. In the United States, pencak silat has continued to develop through the efforts of the Indonesian diaspora, instructors, and martial arts communities.

The event opened with a Rampak Kendang performance by the Nusantara Budaya community, reflecting the close connection between pencak silat and Indonesian cultural traditions. The performance showcased the blend of movement, rhythm, discipline, and heritage that remains central to the sport.

Among those attending the championship were Wona Sumantri, president of the USA Pencak Silat Federation, federation officials, Chris Robinson, head of the Williamsburg Pencak Silat Dojo in Virginia, and a number of accomplished athletes.

Ambassador Indroyono said efforts to bring pencak silat to the Olympic Games align with discussions and aspirations raised during the 16th National Congress of the Indonesian Pencak Silat Association (IPSI) in April 2026.

He noted that Olympic recognition would require sustained athlete development, stronger competition structures, and a commitment to preserving pencak silat’s identity as a cultural legacy of Indonesia.

The growth of pencak silat in the United States has been driven in part by Wona Sumantri, a Sundanese-American practitioner who has spent more than three decades promoting and teaching the sport. Based in Maryland, she also helped establish the USA Pencak Silat Federation in 2012.

From small community groups, pencak silat has expanded to at least 15 U.S. states and is now represented through organizations including the United States Sport Silat Association (USSSA), USA Pencak Silat Federation (UPSF), and Pentjak Silat USA.

The martial art is actively practiced in states including California, Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Hampshire, New York, Texas, Utah, Vermont, and Virginia.

Several athletes competing in the Virginia championship had recently returned from training camps in Indonesia, where they spent two to three weeks learning directly from experienced instructors at a number of pencak silat centers, including Padepokan Putra Betawi, Padepokan IPSI, Padepokan Pendekar Bapak Haji Jatnika, and Padepokan Persaudaraan Pencak Silat Salamun Alaikum.

Those experiences provided participants with a deeper understanding of the techniques, values, and traditions of pencak silat, which they later brought into competition in the United States.

The championship featured both artistic and combat disciplines. The artistic category highlighted the elegance, harmony, precision, and beauty of movement, while the combat division emphasized discipline, courage, sportsmanship, and resilience developed through years of training.

In the 2026 championship, the men’s artistic title was won by Zacharia Mohamed, while Asiya Saleem claimed the women’s artistic crown.

Beyond the competition itself, the event demonstrated how pencak silat continues to serve as a cultural bridge between Indonesia and the United States. As the sport gains recognition in more countries, supporters believe its prospects for broader international exposure, including future Olympic consideration, will continue to grow.
