RRI.CO.ID, Nagoya - The Indonesian women’s basketball team opened its campaign at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games with a victory, defeating Thailand 61-52 in their preliminary Group A match.

The triumph at the Aichi International Arena on Thursday, September 17, 2026, carried extra significance as Thailand had previously beaten Indonesia at the 2025 SEA Games.

Head coach Gitautas Kievinas admitted the contest was far tougher than the scoreline suggested. “This was a difficult game. We may have controlled it, but it wasn’t as easy as it looked. Thailand fought hard with a very good team and a very good coach,” he said.

He added that the victory served as payback for last year’s defeat. “We lost to them at the SEA Games, so this is our revenge. Now the score is 1–1, and I can retire happily," he said.

Player Dewa Ayu Sriartha Kusuma expressed joy and gratitude for the result, calling it a response to the earlier loss. “I feel very happy and thankful. This feels like revenge for us, because we lost to them before. We came into this game determined to give our best,” she said.

Ayu noted that facing Thailand had been a key target since the team’s Asian Games preparations. She also praised the support provided in Nagoya, both from organizers and local fans.

“The people of Nagoya really love sports. I saw many come to watch us, and they were very supportive. I’m so happy they came and gave us their encouragement,” she added.

Indonesia will next face China in their upcoming Group A clash. (Diffa Sephiawardhani)
