RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia's women's basketball team opened its Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026 campaign with a crucial victory over Thailand, relying on a collective performance and dominance on the boards to strengthen its hopes of advancing from a challenging group.

Indonesia defeated Thailand 61-52 in their Group A opener at Aichi International Arena in Nagoya on Thursday, September 17, 2026, securing an important result in a pool that also features regional powerhouse China.

While forward Kimberley Pierre-Louis delivered a standout performance with a double-double, the victory was built on contributions across the roster and the team's control of key statistical categories.

Kimberley finished with 14 points, 16 rebounds, and six assists in 33 minutes and 52 seconds on the court, Antara reported.

Under Lithuanian head coach Gitautas Kievinas, Indonesia recorded 50 rebounds, 20 assists, and eight steals, highlighting its ability to control possession, create scoring opportunities, and apply defensive pressure throughout the game.

The Indonesian side started aggressively in the opening quarter, attacking the paint to create shooting opportunities. Thailand stayed within reach during a tightly contested start, but Indonesia's efficient offense allowed it to edge ahead 14-13 at the end of the first quarter.

The gap widened in the second quarter as Indonesia combined strong interior play with effective ball movement. Thailand increased its defensive intensity and managed to cut the deficit on several occasions, but the partnership between Kimberley and Dewa Made Ayu Sriartha helped Indonesia maintain control and extend its lead to 36-26 by halftime.

After the break, Indonesia continued to capitalize on its physical advantage under the basket and its superiority in rebounding. Thailand attempted to mount a comeback through fast-paced attacks, but Indonesia responded with disciplined team basketball and scoring contributions from multiple players.

Rather than relying on a single offensive option, Indonesia spread its scoring across the lineup, making it more difficult for Thailand to contain. The Red and White squad entered the final quarter with a 49-37 advantage.

Indonesia maintained its composure in the closing stages, protecting possession and taking advantage of fast-break opportunities to stay ahead. A jump shot from Kimberley provided Indonesia's final points of the game and helped seal the 61-52 victory.

The result provides an early boost to Indonesia's hopes of progressing beyond the group stage and sets up a tougher challenge against China in the next match. According to the official schedule, Indonesia will face China on Monday, September 21, 2026, at 7 p.m. local time. ***
