Strong Football Ecosystem Can Make Indonesia Asian Power: AFC

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia has the potential to become a major force in Asian football if its growing talent and enthusiasm are supported by a strong and sustainable football ecosystem, according to Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Secretary General Datuk Seri Windsor John.

John said Indonesia is on a positive path, with progress in governance, competition structures, youth development, infrastructure and national team performance. However, he stressed that Indonesia needs a clear formula to turn its potential into long-term success.

"Success in football cannot be built on passion alone. Passion provides the foundation, but sustainable success requires vision, investment, strong institutions, and a clear pathway from grassroots to elite performance," John said while speaking at the Indonesia Sport Summit 2026 in Jakarta on Sunday, September 13, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

According to John, a healthy football ecosystem requires strong contributions from grassroots development, talent identification, youth development, age-group competitions, professional clubs and quality coaches.

It also requires collaboration among the government, football federations, associations, clubs, schools, communities and the private sector. "Because every part of the ecosystem is strengthened, football becomes stronger as a result," he said.

John highlighted Indonesia's football development over the past several years. He noted progress in governance, competition structures, youth development, infrastructure and the performance of the national team.

He said Indonesia's run to the round of 16 at the 2023 Asian Cup was an important milestone. Indonesia's performance in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers also demonstrated the country's growing competitiveness in Asia.

"Indonesia has passion and talent and is increasingly working hard to build the structures needed to turn that potential into sustainable success," he concluded. ***
