Japan Hosts Dinner to Support Indonesia Ahead Asian Games 2026

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Eleven days before the opening of the 2026 Asian Games and Asian Para Games in Nagoya, Japanese Ambassador to Indonesia Ueno Atsushi hosted a warm dinner reception to show support for Team Indonesia.
The gathering, held on Tuesday, September 8, was praised by Indonesian Minister of Youth and Sports Erick Thohir, who highlighted Japan’s proven track record as host of major international sporting events, including two Summer Olympics and three Asian Games.
“This proves Japan’s expertise in hosting global competitions. Coupled with the politeness, diligence, and friendliness of its people, Japanese culture is widely embraced worldwide. Indonesia has much to learn from this,” Erick said, as quoted on the ministry's official website.
He also noted that nearly 280,000 Indonesians now live in Japan, a community he hopes will act as “cultural ambassadors” by absorbing positive values and sharing them back home.
Beyond sports diplomacy, Minister Erick and Ambassador Ueno agreed on strengthening youth and sports cooperation. Indonesia proposed promoting Pencak Silat in Japan, while both countries’ sports committees discussed technical exchanges and athlete development in fencing and gymnastics.
“Programs in youth and sports must continue to grow. This is people‑to‑people diplomacy that directly strengthens ties between our nations,” Erick emphasized.
The event was attended by Chef de Mission Todotua Pasaribu, NOC Indonesia Chairman Raja Sapta Oktohari, representatives from the National Paralympic Committee (NPC) Indonesia, sports federation leaders, and Japanese business representatives investing in Indonesia. ***
