RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s boccia team has made history, clinching the nation’s first‑ever World Boccia Championship crown with a dominant performance in Seoul, South Korea, from August 24 to September 4, 2026.
The squad captured three gold medals and one silver, a result head coach Islahuzzaman Nur Yadin described as “equivalent in value to the Paralympics.”
Gold medals came from Handayani in the women’s BC1 class, Muhammad Afrizal Syafa in the men’s BC1 class, and the mixed BC1/BC2 team of Afrizal Syafa, Felix Ardi Yudha, and Gischa Zayana. Felix Ardi Yudha also secured silver in the men’s BC2 class.
Indonesia topped the medal table ahead of Thailand (two golds, two silvers) and Hong Kong (one gold, two silvers, two bronzes).
Nur Yadin praised the athletes’ confidence and consistency, noting their earlier victories at level‑two events in Kazakhstan and Portugal. He highlighted the achievement as extraordinary, given this was Indonesia’s first time qualifying for the World Boccia Championship.
The coach stressed that the points earned are crucial for securing a place at the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympics, with Handayani’s BC1 women’s category seen as a key pathway. “At the Paris 2024 Paralympics she had no ranking, but this year she consistently reached the podium and defended her performance,” he said.
With the world title secured, the team now shifts focus to the Asian Para Games 2026 in Nagoya, Japan, scheduled for October 18–24. ***
