RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s top men’s singles shuttler Jonatan Christie is treating the China Masters 2026 in Shenzhen not just as another tournament, but as a crucial opportunity to collect ranking points and strengthen his bid for the BWF World Tour Finals later this year.
Seeded first, Jonatan opened his campaign on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, with a straight-game victory over Malaysia’s Leong Jun Hao, 21–17, 21–19, securing a place in the round of 16.
While satisfied with the win, he admitted the need to adapt to the arena’s conditions. “Today went quite well, but I’m still adjusting to the atmosphere here,” he said in a statement released by the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI), as quoted by Antara.
The match highlighted Jonatan’s ability to respond to tactical shifts. After taking the first game, he faced a tougher challenge in the second when Leong altered his strategy. Jonatan briefly trailed but countered with adjustments of his own to close out the contest.
“In the second game I was behind because he changed strategies, but I managed to respond with my own counterstrategy,” he explained.
For Jonatan, the China Masters is part of a bigger picture. With only the top eight players qualifying for the season-ending finals, every point matters. “The hope is to go as far as possible here," he said.
"The focus is on collecting as many points as I can to secure a place in the World Tour Finals,” he concluded.
Despite his top-seed status, Jonatan downplayed any advantage, noting that the draw position changes but the level of competition remains equally tough. Next, he will face Hong Kong’s Jason Gunawan, who advanced after defeating Japan’s Koki Watanabe 21–12, 21–17. ***
