Global Trail Runners Set to Converge on Lake Toba for UTMB 2026

RRI.CO.ID, Medan - Lake Toba in North Sumatra will welcome athletes from 33 countries this June as the province hosts the Trail of the Kings–Lake Toba by Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB) 2026, a world-class trail running event scheduled for June 12–14 in Samosir Regency.
“This international sport tourism event must be a momentum to showcase Lake Toba’s readiness as a global destination,” Assistant for General Administration at the North Sumatra Provincial Secretariat, Muhammad Suib, said following a coordination meeting in Medan on Tuesday, May 12.
He urged local administrations and communities to seize the opportunity to boost regional economic growth.
He also emphasized that the success of the event is a shared responsibility. “Let us demonstrate that Lake Toba is not only beautiful but also capable of hosting a professional, world-class destination,” he added.
Acting Head of the Provincial Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy Agency, Yuda Pratiwi Setiawan, noted that the return of Trail of the Kings by UTMB further strengthens North Sumatra’s position as a leading sport tourism hub. “So far, 752 runners from 33 countries have registered,” she said.
Participants hail from diverse nations including Malaysia, Singapore, France, Japan, the United Kingdom, Vietnam, China, Taiwan, Australia, Hong Kong, Russia, South Africa, Switzerland, Oman, Ireland, and Indonesia. Race categories range from 100K, 60K, 28K, 10K, and 5K to a special kids’ division.
Last year’s edition drew 1,081 runners from 26 countries and 21 Indonesian provinces, generating an estimated Rp 101.96 billion (USD 5.84 million) in economic impact across local SMEs, hotels, transport, food, and handicrafts.
“This event is a golden opportunity to promote the natural beauty, traditions, and culture of North Sumatra, while cementing Lake Toba’s reputation as a world-class sport tourism destination,” Yuda concluded. ***
