RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Indonesia's Minister of Transportation, Dudy Purwagandhi, said Indonesia seeks to regain its seat on the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) under Part III for the 2026–2028 term. He said a safe, secure, efficient, and sustainable aviation system is essential to maintaining connectivity across Indonesia as an archipelagic country.
“As an archipelagic country with thousands of islands spread across a vast geographic area, a safe, secure, efficient, and sustainable aviation system is essential to connect the public and support our national development,” Dudy said during a meeting with ambassadors of friendly countries in Jakarta on Tuesday, September 29, 2026.
According to the Minister, a seat on the ICAO Council would provide Indonesia with an opportunity to actively contribute to the formulation of global civil aviation policies. The opportunity has expanded following an increase in the number of ICAO Council seats from 36 to 40 countries.
Indonesia’s candidacy also builds on its previous participation in the ICAO Council, where it held a seat for 12 consecutive terms from 1962 to 2001. The participation reflects Indonesia’s continued commitment to strengthening international aviation safety and security.
Indonesia’s bid is also supported by the recovery of its national aviation sector. In the first half of 2026, 257 airports across the country served 24.9 million domestic passengers and 18.5 million international passengers. In terms of aviation safety, Indonesia recorded an ICAO safety audit score of 78.85 percent, above the global average. Meanwhile, Indonesia achieved a score of 88.53 percent in an aviation security audit.
Dudy called on representatives of ICAO member states attending the meeting to support Indonesia’s candidacy. He also conveyed the support would help Indonesia contribute to efforts to build a safe, resilient, and inclusive global civil aviation industry. (Shayla Nabila)
