Barantin Strengthens Traceability of Ornamental Plant Exports from East Java

RRI.CO.ID, Batu - The Indonesian Quarantine Authority (Barantin) enhances its traceability system for ornamental plant exports from East Java to safeguard the international market acceptance of Indonesian commodities. The move was carried out through a direct visit by the East Java Animal, Fish, and Plant Quarantine Center together with the Plant Quarantine Risk Management Directorate of Barantin to several export ornamental plant nurseries in Batu City.

In a statement received on Monday, September 21, 2026, This effort to strengthen the traceability system comes amid high traffic of ornamental plants from East Java, which have reached markets including the United States, Japan, and several European countries. According to certification data from East Java Quarantine, between January and August 2026 there were 3,616 export certifications for ornamental plants, with a volume reaching 874,005 stems and a commodity value of Rp9.21 billion.

The five top destination countries for these ornamental plant exports are the United States, Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands. The high export volume and wide range of destination countries are among the reasons the traceability system needs to be continuously strengthened.

Tracing down to the nursery level is considered essential because traceability is one of the key aspects in meeting the phytosanitary requirements of destination countries. The system also serves as a crucial tool whenever a notification of noncompliance is issued regarding Indonesian ornamental plants in a destination country, since strong traceability allows the source of the problem to be traced back to the point of production.

A representative of the Plant Quarantine Risk Management Directorate, Kemas, explained that the nursery visit was carried out so the directorate could directly understand how the ornamental plant export business process runs on the ground. "With this understanding, we can gain a picture of the ideal traceability concept based on real conditions in the field, so that in the future every case of noncompliance in exported ornamental plants can be traced back to its source accurately," he said.

The Head of the Plant Quarantine Working Group at East Java Quarantine, Masanto, added that guidance for business operators will continue to be carried out so the traceability system can be implemented more effectively. "We are committed to continuing to accompany ornamental plant business operators in implementing a reliable traceability system," he said.

He noted that a strong traceability system is also important for maintaining the trust of trading partner countries, especially amid increasingly strict international biosecurity requirements.

The Acting Head of East Java Quarantine, Hudiansyah Is Nursal, said he hopes the traceability concept can be implemented gradually across the entire production chain of export oriented ornamental plants through collaboration between the government and business operators. "This kind of collaboration between government agencies and business operators is expected to become a model of cooperation that can be replicated at other ornamental plant production centers in Indonesia, in order to support the sustainable growth of national horticultural commodity exports," Hudiansyah said.
