Indonesia and China Partnership Aims to Advance Urban Housing Solutions

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Ministry of Housing and Settlement (PKP) is strengthening cooperation with China on housing technology, focusing on developing construction methods for apartment complexes in densely populated areas.

Housing and Settlement Minister Maruarar Sirait discussed the initiative during a meeting with the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China, Wang Lutong. The discussion followed up on talks held by both parties about two months earlier.

Minister Maruarar said the partnership is built on mutual trust and benefit, with the aim of generating positive impacts for both Indonesia and China.

“We are following up on a meeting held about two months ago. We are discussing cooperation in the housing sector based on mutual trust and the goal of delivering positive impacts for both nations,” he said in a written statement on Thursday, September 10, 2026.

A key focus of the meeting was the use and transfer of technology for constructing vertical housing in densely populated areas. The technology will be adapted to Indonesia’s land conditions and regulatory framework to ensure safe, efficient, and affordable housing development.

Minister Maruarar noted that the Chinese side will first study Indonesia’s land characteristics and regulations before determining which technology is most suitable. “Once the Chinese side has studied the land and regulations, we will then decide which technology is appropriate,” he said.

The cooperation is also intended to generate broader economic benefits. The Ministry is encouraging the involvement of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), the use of domestic products, and the employment of Indonesian workers. “If there are Indonesian products that meet the required specifications, they will be prioritized. The same applies to the workforce,” he said.

Minister Maruarar hopes that the positive relationship between Indonesia and China will continue through concrete cooperation that supports the provision of safe, decent, and affordable housing for the public.

Both parties agreed to establish a joint team to accelerate discussions on regulations, land, technology, and implementation schemes. The team includes representatives from the Ministry of Housing and Settlement to support technical discussions and survey potential development sites.

Meanwhile, Ambassador Wang Lutong reaffirmed China’s commitment to strengthening housing cooperation, including exchanging experience and technology in housing management and development. (Misni Parjiati)
