Flight Safety Monitoring Continues as Airport Operations Normalize

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi confirmed that flight operations have returned to normal at several airports affected by the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau. The Ministry of Transportation reopened the airports on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, allowing flight activities to resume.

Although operations have fully returned to normal, flight safety remains the top priority. Monitoring and coordination continue to ensure safe conditions for the public and air travel service users.

“The previously affected airports reopened on Tuesday, and flight operations have been running normally since then. We continue to monitor and coordinate to ensure flight safety is maintained,” Minister Dudy said in Jakarta on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.

The affected airports include Soekarno‑Hatta, Halim Perdanakusuma, Husein Sastranegara, Budiarto, and Pondok Cabe. Several airports in Sumatra were also impacted, namely Muhammad Taufiq Kiemas, Raden Inten II, and Atung Bungsu.

Soekarno‑Hatta International Airport recorded 875 domestic and international flights on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, consisting of 436 departures and 439 arrivals.

On September 9, 2026, Soekarno‑Hatta is scheduled to handle 966 flights, comprising 722 domestic and 244 international flights, with an estimated 131,495 passengers.

“We are ensuring that flight operations continue while closely monitoring conditions on the ground. We also urge the public and air travelers to remain calm and follow official information from the government, airport authorities, and airlines,” Minister Dudy said.

Even though flights have returned to normal, the Ministry of Transportation continues to monitor airspace conditions and the activity of Mount Anak Krakatau. This measure is intended to anticipate any changes that could affect the safety and smooth operation of national flights.

The Ministry, together with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), AirNav Indonesia, airport operators, airlines, and other stakeholders, is maintaining continuous monitoring.

Coordination is being carried out to anticipate the potential impact of Mount Anak Krakatau’s activity on national flight operations.

PVMBG recorded an eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau on September 9, 2026, at 00:47 WIB, with the volcano currently at Alert Level III (Siaga). BMKG stated that, as of now, there are no reports of volcanic ash affecting flight operations in the area. (Misni Parjiati)
