Three Radio Heroes Risked Death to Air Indonesia's Freedom

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - On August 17, 1945, Imperial Japanese forces strictly guarded Jakarta's primary radio installation against any nationalist activity. Armed military police blocked native broadcasters from entering live domestic transmission rooms across the building.

Tension peaked when a clandestine messenger smuggled the handwritten Proclamation text directly into the fortified facility. Broadcaster Mohammad Jusuf Ronodipuro received the urgent historic document, realizing its dangerous implications.

He immediately consulted senior colleague Bachtiar Lubis to plan an emergency broadcast over sovereign radio. They quickly recognized that armed imperial sentries monitored every single operational booth on site.

Broadcast technician Joe Saragih stepped forward, famously asserting that the technical hurdle remained entirely solvable. Saragih devised an ingenious plan to bypass guarded master switches using simple jumper patch cables.

The technical crew targeted a decommissioned foreign-language studio that remained completely shut down and dark. Technicians entered without turning on lamps, avoiding any suspicion from armed guards patrolling corridors outside.

He patched the unlit studio's microphone directly into primary modulation lines leading toward transmitter towers. Senior colleague Bachtiar Lubis kept watch along corridors while technical preparations proceeded in absolute darkness.

At seven in the evening, Ronodipuro read the historic sovereign text into the live microphone. The bold broadcast echoed across Java, reaching foreign shortwave monitoring stations thousands of kilometers away.

Japanese military police quickly burst inside, viciously beating the brave broadcasters with weapons and heavy boots. Ronodipuro suffered permanent bodily injuries, narrowly escaping execution when an officer raised a ceremonial sword.

The patriotic trio risked their lives, breaking colonial blockades to announce national independence forever. Their historic technological defiance eventually inspired the formal establishment of Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI).
