Integrated Shrimp Farm in Waingapu Targets to Produce 52,800 Tons Annually

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian government is currently developing an Integrated Shrimp Farm (ISF) in Waingapu, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). The project is targeted for completion in 2027 and is expected to begin operations in 2028, with an estimated annual production capacity of around 52,800 tons of shrimp. The project is also expected to strengthen national food security.

Head of the Government Communications Agency, Muhammad Qodari, said the Waingapu ISF is being developed on a 2,150-hectare site, with 1,361 hectares allocated for shrimp ponds and supporting facilities. The development is also part of the government’s efforts to promote more balanced regional development and economic growth in NTT.

“When fully operational, the Waingapu ISF is targeted to produce around 52,800 tons of shrimp per year, increasing the national shrimp supply while strengthening the fulfillment of domestic and export market demand,” Qodari said at a press conference in Jakarta on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.

The project has an estimated investment value of 500 million U.S. dollars, equivalent to around 7.2 trillion rupiah. The investment covers the construction of aquaculture ponds, water reservoirs, wastewater treatment facilities, intake networks, quarantine facilities, production roads, and a main wastewater treatment facility. As of July 29, 2026, physical construction progress had reached around 10 percent, supported by more than 300 units of heavy equipment and local workers.

The Waingapu ISF is also projected to generate economic benefits by creating around 7,000 jobs across the shrimp industry value chain, from upstream activities and on-farm production to downstream industries. Of this total, around 3,000 workers will receive training tailored to the needs of the integrated shrimp industry.

“The project will eventually create a new economic chain in East Sumba and open up more business opportunities for local communities,” he said.

In addition to shrimp farming, the integrated area is expected to support the growth of various related businesses, including hatcheries, feed mills, cold storage facilities, ice plants, shrimp processing industries, and transportation services. The government expects the development of the Waingapu ISF to strengthen national food security and the fisheries industry while becoming a new driver of economic growth for communities in East Sumba.
