RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI) at the Ministry of Law is strengthening protection for Dieng Coffee's intellectual property (IP). This effort includes presenting a Geographical Indication (GI) certificate and registering a collective trademark as part of the 2026 Dieng Coffee Festival.
Head of DJKI’s Working Team for the Utilization and Supervision of GI, Irma Mariana, said IP protection is essential to developing GI tourism. According to her, protection cannot be limited to GI products alone.
“So when we talk about developing GI tourism, we must also talk about the IP ecosystem,” Irma said during the IP Talks & Coffee session at the 2026 Dieng Coffee Festival, livestreamed on DJKI’s YouTube channel on Saturday, August 29, 2026.
She explained that the IP ecosystem also includes trademarks, copyrights, and communal IP. Cultural elements such as music, songs, and dances can be developed as part of the tourism experience.
Irma also urged business owners to register their trademarks promptly. She noted cases where coffee producers had used a trademark since 2014, only to discover that someone else had registered it first when they attempted to file their application.
“This situation forces business owners to use a different trademark. That’s why trademarks should be registered from the very beginning,” she said.
Founder of the Dieng Culture Festival and Chair of the Dieng Pandawa Tourism Awareness Group, Alif Faozi, emphasized the importance of preserving local cultural assets developed by the community. He said IP protection is crucial for ensuring the sustainability of these assets.
As part of the IP Talks & Coffee series, a certificate for the Geographical Indication of “Dieng Mountains Arabica Coffee from Banjarnegara” was presented. This step strengthens protection for Dieng coffee products.
On the same occasion, the collective trademark “Dieng Mountains Coffee” and the “Dieng Coffee Festival” trademark were registered. Proof of the collective trademark application was also presented during the event.
These measures are expected to strengthen the position of Dieng’s products and creative economic activities. IP protection is also an integral part of developing GI tourism in the region. (Gusti Panji)
