  • GMF completed heavy maintenance and modernization of the Air Force’s C‑130H Hercules, marking a major step toward defense self‑reliance.
  • The project involved technology transfer from Lockheed Martin, strengthening Indonesia’s aerospace maintenance capabilities.
  • The upgraded A‑1319 aircraft now has an extended service life and supports plans for a Hercules MRO center at Kertajati.

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia is intensifying efforts to strengthen its domestic defense industry, marked by the successful completion of heavy maintenance and modernization of the Indonesian Air Force’s C‑130H Hercules aircraft by PT Garuda Maintenance Facility Aero Asia Tbk (GMF).

Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin said the achievement represents an important step toward Indonesia’s self‑reliance in maintaining and developing its defense equipment.

“Today marks a starting point. The modernization of the Indonesian Air Force’s C‑130H transport aircraft demonstrates our independence,” he said at the handover ceremony for aircraft A‑1319 at the GMF hangar at Soekarno‑Hatta Airport, Tangerang, on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, as reported by Antara.

He noted that the success was made possible through a technology‑transfer partnership between GMF and Lockheed Martin, the US‑based manufacturer of the Hercules aircraft. The collaboration is considered crucial for strengthening Indonesia’s aerospace industry and improving maintenance of primary defense systems.

Sjafrie said GMF and PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PT DI), Indonesia’s state‑owned aerospace manufacturer, are expected to expand their capabilities beyond transport aircraft to include fighter jets and reconnaissance platforms.

He also highlighted progress on the planned Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility for Hercules aircraft at Kertajati Airport in West Java, which is projected to become one of the largest Hercules maintenance centers in Asia.

“This is a project we will be working on this year and in the years to come,” he said.

GMF President Director Andi Fahrurrozi said the completion of the C‑130H A‑1319 modernization marks a major milestone in capability development and demonstrates the domestic industry’s ability to support national defense. “GMF is handing over this aircraft to the Ministry of Defense following its modernization,” he said.

A‑1319 is the first Lockheed Martin prototype to undergo major modifications outside the manufacturer’s facilities. The modernization included a center wing box replacement, an avionics upgrade program, and a structural integrity program -- work that aligns the aircraft with global C‑130 technology standards.

The overhaul extends the aircraft’s operational lifespan by 15–20 years and improves reliability and readiness for Indonesian Air Force missions.

The modernization process adhered to standards set by the Indonesian Defence Airworthiness Authority (IDAA), involving a series of certification procedures to ensure airworthiness before the aircraft returned to service.

The collaboration also included technology transfer, component supply, engineering expertise, workforce training, certification, and acceptance flight tests, as confirmed by GMF’s official press release.

Building on this achievement, GMF stated it will continue strengthening its engineering capabilities and expanding collaboration with stakeholders to provide integrated MRO services and support the growth of Indonesia’s defense industry. ***
