Indonesia Holds Night of Freedom for 81st Independence Day

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia's Ministry of Creative Economy held the "Malam Merdeka" or Night of Freedom in Jakarta on Monday, August 17, 2026. The celebration is part of Indonesia's 81st Independence Day commemorations, featuring creative and interactive public events.

Minister of Creative Economy, Teuku Riefky Harsya, said his ministry is responsible for organizing the Night of Freedom. He said the celebration considers Indonesia's current situation, including recent disasters in several regions.

“We are carrying out this entire series while, of course, continuing to pay attention to the current national situation, with the conditions that have been conveyed regarding disasters in several areas. This year's Independence celebration provides a space to remember the nation's journey, strengthen togetherness, and convey the message that Indonesia is one,” he said.

The Night of Freedom features immersive installations, video mapping, a decorated vehicle carnival, and a drone show. The activities combine creative experiences and technology with public participation during the Independence Day celebrations.

The immersive experience is presented through installations at several locations around Monas and the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout. Visitors can engage with interactive experiences as part of the Night of Freedom celebrations.

Teuku Riefky also mentioned the themes behind the immersive experience presented during the celebration. He said the experience brings three themes for the public.

“All these experiences bring three themes: first, Me and Indonesia; second, My Hopes for Indonesia; and then also Proud to Be Indonesian,” he said.

The celebrations are also adjusted to reflect empathy for communities affected by recent disasters. The changes allow Independence Day celebrations to continue while maintaining solidarity with Indonesians facing difficult circumstances.
