RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – The Ministry of Creative Economy has officially opened opportunities for collaboration with the Japanese gaming company Nintendo in the Indonesian market. Vice Minister of Creative Economy, Irene Umar, announced this during the Nintendo Switch launch event in Jakarta on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.
She also said Nintendo's official presence grants local game developers access to the global gaming industry ecosystem, including official development tools and game development kits. Previously, such access had been a major hurdle for Indonesian developers looking to produce games for console platforms.
Irene explained that many Indonesian game developers have already gained international recognition and successfully marketed their work in various countries. However, limited access to official tools has prevented this potential from being fully realized.
She hopes that Nintendo's arrival will be accompanied by training programs to help local developers understand the mechanisms for entering the international console market. Furthermore, this move is part of the government's effort to curb the circulation of pirated games by encouraging the use of official products.
The gaming industry is currently one of the fastest-growing sectors within Indonesia's creative economy, with the applications and games sub-sector growing by up to 18 percent. This figure positions Indonesia as a high-potential gaming market within Southeast Asia.
Irene emphasized that the presence of a global company like Nintendo should not be viewed merely as the entry of a foreign player into the domestic market. Instead, this move is seen as an opportunity for Indonesian developers to commercially market their work on the global stage.
