Indonesia, Japan Agree to Strengthen Partnership in Railway Signaling System

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Indonesia and Japan are strengthening cooperation in developing telecommunications and signaling technologies for the national railway system.

The partnership was formalized through the signing of a Head of Agreement (HoA) between PT Moda Integrasi Transportasi Jabodetabek (MITJ) and Nippon Signal Co., Ltd.

The signing took place at the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo, witnessed by the Indonesian Ambassador to Japan, Nurmala Kartini Sjahrir. The cooperation aims to enhance safety standards while modernizing Indonesia’s railway system.

The HoA signing was part of the PT MITJ Business Matching Forum, organized by the company in collaboration with the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo. The forum brought together PT MITJ and its partner, PT Duta Sarana Perkasa, with more than 10 Japanese companies.

The goal was to explore collaboration on the precast tunnel segment project for Jakarta MRT Phase 3’s east–west line. The discussions covered potential cooperation in the precast concrete industry, transit-oriented development (TOD), and railway technology.

The project is supported by an Official Development Assistance (ODA) funding scheme through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) worth JPY 140 billion (approximately USD 883.44 million).

Ambassador Kartini said Indonesia–Japan transportation cooperation, established through the Jakarta MRT, is now entering a new phase.

“The Jakarta MRT is a tangible symbol of the friendship between Indonesia and Japan. It goes beyond construction to encompass safety and signaling technologies designed to safeguard millions of passengers every day,” she said.

PT MITJ President Director Fuad I.Z. Fachroeddin said the agreement is a strategic step toward bringing world-class safety standards to the Greater Jakarta area. “The combination of Japan’s precision technology with Indonesia’s needs has created a safer, more reliable, and more integrated transportation system,” he said.

In addition to the HoA signing, a technical presentation was delivered on the precast tunnel segment project for Jakarta MRT Phase 3. PT MITJ executives also met with several Japanese business leaders to explore further cooperation opportunities.

Fuad expressed hope that the event would strengthen Japanese investment and technology transfer to Indonesia. “This will also drive the development of safe and sustainable transportation infrastructure,” he said. (Gusti Panji)
