RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Ministry of Immigration and Corrections (Kemenimipas) is strengthening inmate development programs to prevent crime recidivism. The effort includes character-building, skills training, and independence development to prepare inmates for reintegration into society.

Head of the Correctional Cooperation Sub-Directorate at Kemenimipas, Rika Aprianti, said the correctional paradigm continues to evolve. According to her, correctional institutions are no longer merely places of punishment, but also centers of rehabilitation.

“Personality development aims to shape inmates’ character and integrity through religious, moral, and national defense education. It also enhances intellectual abilities, legal awareness, adaptability to society, and provides deradicalization programs for those who need them,” Rika said in a written statement on Friday, August 7, 2026.

The ministry is also strengthening its independence development program for all inmates to complement personality development. Rika said the program focuses on building skills and competencies with economic value.

Job training, interest development, and production activities continue to be expanded through the food security and MSME sectors. She said the training is expected to equip inmates with the ability to work or start businesses after release.

She also noted that many former inmates have successfully contributed to economic and social development. According to her, the training programs provide greater opportunities for them to live independently.

Through these programs, inmates are prepared to become productive individuals capable of contributing to society. The ultimate goal is not only to complete their prison sentences, but also to strengthen the process of social reintegration.

As a form of appreciation, the state grants conditional rights to inmates who successfully participate in the programs. These rights include remission, conditional release, conditional leave, family visitation leave, and assimilation.

The ministry is also optimizing the role of Correctional Centers and Griya Abhipraya as “Houses of Hope.” The optimization includes mentoring, training, economic empowerment, job fairs, and cross-sector collaboration.

The ministry hopes these measures will help former inmates become independent and reintegrated into society after release, while reducing recidivism and strengthening public trust in the correctional system. (Misni Parjiati)
