RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia is experiencing unusually cold evenings during the current dry season. Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophisics Agency (BMKG) explained the phenomenon locally known as bediding affects southern Indonesian regions.
In an interview with RRI Voice of Indonesia on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, Deputy for Climatology, Ardhasena Sopaheluwakan, discussed the recurring seasonal temperature changes. He emphasized the phenomenon occurs annually, not exclusively during 2026.
Dry winds from Australia cross Java, Bali, and Nusa Tenggara during dry months. Those dry air masses reduce cloud cover across southern Indonesian territories significantly.
Limited cloud cover allows daytime heat escaping rapidly after sunset every evening. Consequently, temperatures feel considerably colder than typical Indonesian nighttime conditions during July.
Ardhasena explained, "In high located cities such as Malang or Bandung, it can reach 15 or 16 degrees Celsius in the morning." The temperature range reflects current dry-season conditions across southern Indonesian regions this year.
Low-lying cities experience milder mornings compared with elevated Indonesian urban centers currently. Jakarta and Surabaya generally record morning temperatures around twenty-three or twenty-four degrees.
Higher mountainous regions may experience frost conditions affecting agriculture and surrounding communities. Temperatures occasionally fall below freezing levels within Dieng and Pangalangan highland areas.
BMKG said the colder conditions remain connected with dry Australian monsoon air masses. The temperature differences become especially noticeable between early mornings and midday periods.
Tourists visiting Indonesia should prepare clothing suitable for contrasting daily temperature conditions. BMKG recommended jackets, hydration, moisturizers, and sufficient mountain hiking equipment during visits.
The agency described the current period as relatively comfortable for tourism activities nationwide. Nevertheless, visitors should remain cautious regarding hypothermia risks while hiking high mountains.
