RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian government is developing a biodiversity credit scheme to expand financing for biodiversity conservation while attracting greater private sector investment. The initiative is expected to promote sustainable business practices, strengthen conservation funding, and support the country's transition toward a green economy.
Biodiversity credits assign measurable value to activities that protect, restore, or enhance ecosystems. The mechanism enables businesses to invest in conservation projects managed by communities or organizations, helping offset environmental impacts while contributing to national biodiversity goals.
Deputy for Pollution and Environmental Damage Control at the Ministry of Environment and Environmental Management Agency (KLH/BPLH), Rasio Ridho Sani, said the scheme is being designed to encourage private investment in biodiversity protection, restoration, and sustainable use
"The government is preparing a biodiversity financing scheme, including Biodiversity Credit, to encourage private investment in the protection, restoration, and sustainable use of biodiversity through governance that upholds integrity, fairness, and accountability," Rasio said in Jakarta on Friday, July 24, as quoted by Antara.
He said the initiative is aligned with Indonesia's 2025–2045 National Long-Term Development Plan (RPJPN) and the country's commitments under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF).
The Biodiversity Credit scheme also forms part of the 2025–2045 Indonesian Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (IBSAP), which seeks to strengthen conservation financing through collaboration among the government, businesses, financial institutions, and other stakeholders.
Beyond developing financing mechanisms, the government is encouraging domestic companies to strengthen their understanding of climate change, biodiversity, and environmental economic instruments. The effort is intended to position Indonesian businesses to capitalize on emerging opportunities in the global green economy.
The initiative was highlighted during the Biodiversity+ Business Forum in Jakarta, jointly organized by the Ministry of Environment/BPLH, the Ministry of National Development Planning (PPN/Bappenas), and the German government, with support from GIZ Indonesia, the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN), the Indonesia Business Council for Sustainable Development (IBCSD), EuroCham, and the Habibie Innovation Incubator.
Commission Manager of the Climate and Biodiversity Hub at GIZ Indonesia & ASEAN, Karin Allgoewer, said the forum reflects the growing partnership between Indonesia and Germany in advancing greener, more inclusive, and sustainable development.
"The multi-stakeholder collaboration fostered through this forum is expected to provide the impetus for stronger partnerships between the private sector, government, development partners, and conservation organizations, enabling them to play a broader role in biodiversity conservation," she said.
Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy to Indonesia, ASEAN, and Timor-Leste, Thomas Graf, said Indonesia's rich biodiversity represents a strategic economic asset capable of driving innovation, attracting investment, and strengthening food security if managed responsibly.
Through the Biodiversity Credit initiative and broader cross-sector collaboration, the government aims to establish biodiversity financing as a new investment driver that supports economic growth while safeguarding Indonesia's ecosystems and natural resources for future generations. ***
