RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Indonesia's National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), and OceanX, a U.S.-based ocean research and conservation organization, strengthened their partnership to advance science-based ocean policy. The commitment was highlighted during the Marine Futures Unlocked 2: From Insight to Impact Symposium in Jakarta on Thursday, July 23, 2026.

The partnership builds on Mission Indonesia 2024–2026, a joint research program between BRIN and OceanX. The initiative has produced scientific findings covering marine geoscience, biodiversity, oceanography, conservation, and ocean governance.

BRIN Chair Arif Satria said Indonesia's vast marine resources require strong scientific evidence and cross-sector collaboration. He added the research supports evidence-based policies for sustainable marine resource management.

The symposium also served as a platform to share research findings with policymakers and international partners. It also encouraged stronger collaboration to advance sustainable marine governance and conservation.

Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono outlined priority areas where research should deliver tangible impacts. He said science and innovation remain essential for addressing future marine challenges.

“Future marine challenges require research that delivers tangible impacts, particularly in strengthening conservation and data-based ocean governance, developing modern and environmentally friendly aquaculture, efficient tuna and marine fish farming, low-emission vessel technology, as well as self-sufficiency in fish seed and feed," he said.

Trenggono also emphasized that Indonesia's marine future depends on broad collaboration across multiple sectors. He called for science and research to remain the foundation of sustainable marine policies.

“I emphasize that the future of the marine sector cannot be built by a single institution. Collaboration among the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, BRIN, OceanX, universities, local governments, communities, and international partners must ensure that science and data become the foundation of policies and solutions for a healthy, productive, and sustainable Indonesian marine sector,” he added.

The symposium gathered government officials, researchers, universities, conservation organizations, and international partners. Indonesia expects the partnership to strengthen its position as a global center for tropical marine research.
