RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - TikTok has become the first electronic system provider in Indonesia to openly report its compliance with Government Regulation No. 17/2025 on child protection in digital governance. The platform announced that it had closed 1.7 million accounts belonging to children, in line with the regulation that took effect on March 28, 2026.

Communication and Digital Minister Meutya Hafid praised TikTok’s move, noting that the company plans to expand its implementation of the Tunas Regulation. “TikTok is the first to report the number of deactivations, and the first to show that its commitment is backed by concrete steps, transparently communicated to the public through the ministry,” Minister Meutya said at a press conference in Jakarta on April 28, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

Government officials emphasized that compliance standards are shifting from declarations of support to measurable, auditable actions. TikTok’s initiative is seen as setting an example for other platforms. The ministry reported that the number of child accounts closed rose sharply from 780,000 on April 10 to 1.7 million by April 28.

The account closures have affected some adult users, who had their accounts mistakenly suspended. The government acknowledged these side effects but stressed that protecting children remains the priority. TikTok has opened an appeals channel for affected users to restore their accounts.

During a meeting with the minister, TikTok’s Vice President of Global Public Policy, Helena Lersch, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to tackling digital crimes targeting Indonesia, including online gambling, more extensively on its platform.

Minister Meutya underscored that the Tunas Regulation applies to all electronic system providers, both global and local. “We urge platforms that have declared compliance to move beyond commitments and report the concrete steps they have taken to the Indonesian public through the Ministry of Communication and Digital,” she said. ***
