RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta — Indonesia has eliminated import duties on aircraft spare parts in a bid to reinforce its aviation industry amid rising global operating costs. The policy, which reduces import tariffs to zero percent, is aimed at lowering maintenance expenses for airlines.

The government also hoped it would boost the country’s maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) sector. “So, aircraft parts are subject to a 0% import duty, which is expected to help reduce airlines' operating costs,” Coordinating Minister of Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, stated in Jakarta, Monday, April 6, 2026.

Previously, import duties on such components generated around Rp500 billion annually. By removing the tariff, the government hopes to stimulate broader economic activity and attract more investment into the aviation ecosystem.

The minister also mentioned that the government estimated the policy could boost economic activity in the sector and create new jobs in the MRO sector. The move comes as airlines face mounting pressure from rising jet fuel prices, which account for up to 40% of operating costs.

Minister of Transportation, Dudy Purwaghandi, stated that by targeting non-fuel cost components, the government is seeking to offset some of the financial strain in the industry. Furthermore, the government has also adjusted the cap on fuel surcharges.

“We have coordinated with all airlines operating in Indonesia, particularly domestic carriers, and have therefore decided to increase the fuel surcharge by 38%,” he said on the same occasion.

He further stated that the policy will be able to maintain a balance between the sustainability of Indonesia’s aviation industry and protecting the public’s purchasing power.
