RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) supports the readiness of the industry to implement the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) for steel. This step aims to ensure that steel products circulating in the domestic market meet the established quality and safety standards, thereby guaranteeing construction safety and protecting consumer interests.

Based on the press release received by RRI Voice of Indonesia on Monday, 23 February 2026, the Head of the Industrial Services Standardization and Policy Agency (BSKJI), Emmy Suryandari, stated that the implementation of the Mandatory Steel SNI is also aimed at creating healthy business competition, preventing the circulation of substandard steel products, and strengthening the competitiveness of the national steel industry amidst the dynamics of the global market.

The Indonesian National Standard (SNI) for Zinc-Coated Steel (Bj LS) has actually been mandatory since 2008, while the standard for Aluminum-Zinc Coated Steel (Bj LAS) has been in effect since 2009. "Considering that the basic regulation (Permenperin 67/2024) has been issued since November 2024, business actors have actually had an ample transition period to meet the required technical provisions," said Emmy in Jakarta.

Nevertheless, regarding the dynamics of implementing mandatory SNI regulations for galvanized sheet steel and aluminum-zinc coated steel products, the Ministry of Industry has decided to provide deferral in the form of a one-year postponement through the issuance of regulations. This aims to extend the adaptation period for industry players.

"This is also to eliminate entrepreneurs' concerns about their readiness to comply with the mandatory SNI implementation for those products," explained Emmy.

Until now, the industrial ecosystem has proven its readiness with a record of certification that is conducted in an accountable manner. Kemenperin data shows that there are 11 active SNI certificates for domestic products and 7 active SNI certificates for imported products.

This fact simultaneously alleviates concerns of certification challenges or supply shortages in the market. The availability of the issued certificates indicates that the standard compliance procedures are clearly accessible to all parties, both local producers and importers.

The Ministry of Industry reiterated that enforcing standardization through SNI aims to protect the interests of the state and society from the entry of steel products that do not meet construction safety standards.

"With the support of the provided grace period, the government invites all business players to promptly complete the certification process to create a healthy competitive climate, avoid supply chain disruptions, and ensure maximum protection for national consumers," concluded Emmy.
