RRI.CO.ID, Kuala Lumpur - The Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia (KJRI) in Kuching celebrated Indonesia's 81st Independence Day by hosting a cultural performance aboard the Royal Kuching Cruise as it sailed along the Sarawak River in Malaysia.
Titled Harmoni Kemerdekaan: Pagelaran Kebudayaan dalam Memeriahkan Peringatan Hari Ulang Tahun ke-81 Kemerdekaan Republik Indonesia (Harmony of Independence: A Cultural Performance Celebrating the 81st Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia) the event was held on Thursday, August 6, 2026, to strengthen bilateral ties between Indonesia and Sarawak through cultural diplomacy.
The showcase featured a fashion show highlighting diverse traditional Indonesian textiles (wastra) alongside an angklung musical performance by Saung Akar Budaya, presenting UNESCO-recognized intangible cultural heritage to an international audience.
The diplomatic cruise was attended by prominent Sarawak figures, including Datin Patinggi Sri Datuk Wira Lorna Enan Muloon Chan, Datin Sri Zuraini Abdul Jabbar, Datin Dayang Mariani Abang Zain, and Sarawak Tourism Board CEO Sharzede Datu Salleh Askor, alongside Indonesian diaspora members and local partners.
Indonesian diplomatic representatives in Sarawak emphasized that cultural exchanges serve as a vital bridge for fostering mutual trust, tourism cooperation, and friendly cross-border relations. Gusti Nirmala Zulkifli, spouse of the Indonesian Consul General in Kuching, highlighted the unifying power of traditional arts in bilateral relations.
"Culture represents one of the crucial strengths in deepening people-to-people ties and building mutual understanding between nations, through this performance, we remain committed to promoting Indonesia's rich heritage as part of cultural diplomacy that reinforces a positive image internationally, serving as a bridge to strengthen friendship and expand cooperation in arts, culture, and tourism between Indonesia and Sarawak," she said in Sarawak on Thursday, August 6, 2026, as quoted by Antara. ***
