RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian feature film Rencana Besar untuk Mati dengan Tenang (RBMT), directed by Ismail Basbeth, has been selected to compete in the prestigious main competition at the Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) 2026.
According to an official statement released on Friday, June 5, 2026, the film has secured nominations across seven major competitive categories. Regarding the top individual and production honors, the movie is contending for Best Feature and Best Director.
For the performance categories, the production received nods for both Best Actor and Best Actress. Finally, in terms of writing and technical execution, the film is nominated for Best Screenplay, Best Cinematographer, and Best Outstanding Artistic.
"This achievement is a source of pride and honor for us, being able to represent Indonesia in a world-class film festival like SIFF," said producer of RBMT and CEO of Matta Cinema Production, Nugroho Dewanto, as quoted by Antara.
The festival, which runs from June 12 to June 21, 2026, will serve as the global platform for the movie's world premiere. The production, known internationally as My Own Last Supper, was initially launched as a project at the Asian Content and Film Market (ACFM) during the Busan International Film Festival in 2025.
Adapted from a novel of the same title by Wisnu Suryaning Adji, Rencana Besar untuk Mati dengan Tenang centers around an elderly Chinese Indonesian man named Encek. Encek carries deep psychological and political traumas tied directly to his ethnic identity. Through his perspective, the film invites the audience to explore the raw realities of Chinese Indonesian life.
"We want to touch and invite the audience to be able to understand what happened in Encek's life, in a story about generational trauma that was successfully ended by someone who dared to change the fate of himself and his family," explained director Ismail Basbeth.
The film brings together a diverse ensemble cast featuring veteran actors, rising newcomers, and a notable public intellectual. Veteran performers Ferry Salim, Melissa Karim, and Verdi Soleiman lead the lineup, while Jessy Davita and Nicholas Anderson make their official acting debuts through the project.
Adding further attention to the production, prominent academic Rocky Gerung is also set to make his first-ever appearance on the big screen in the film.
Following its international festival run at the Shanghai International Film Festival, Rencana Besar untuk Mati dengan Tenang is scheduled to hit commercial theaters across Indonesia in late 2026. ***
