Governor Pramono Discusses Transportation-Municipal Bonds with NY City Mayor

RRI.CO.ID, Newyork - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung held a bilateral meeting with New York City Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani at Civic Hall in New York on Sunday, September 20, 2026. The meeting was held to exchange experiences on addressing urban issues, including public transportation, flooding, air pollution, and development financing through municipal bonds.

As quoted from Jakarta.go.id, during the meeting, Zohran explored Jakarta’s strategies for tackling traffic congestion and developing public transportation. Pramono explained the development of Transjabodetabek as an effort to strengthen connectivity between Jakarta and its surrounding areas while reducing the use of private vehicles.

This is particularly important given that more than four million people travel in and out of Jakarta, especially during peak hours.

“Through Transjabodetabek, we aim to reduce congestion and the volume of vehicles entering Jakarta while strengthening regional connectivity,” Pramono said in a statement issued by the Jakarta Provincial Government on Monday, September 21, 2026.

Pramono also outlined the Jakarta Provincial Government’s policy of providing free public transportation services to 15 categories of residents, including senior citizens, people with disabilities, students who receive the Jakarta Smart Card, and university students who receive the Jakarta Excellence University Student Card.

Furthermore, Pramono explained Jakarta’s efforts to address flooding through the construction of flood-control infrastructure, reducing groundwater use to curb land subsidence, and developing the Giant Sea Wall.

“Like New York, one of Jakarta’s challenges is flooding. Therefore, we continue to strengthen flood-control infrastructure, reduce groundwater use to curb land subsidence, and develop the Giant Sea Wall,” he said.

The meeting also discussed the Jakarta Provincial Government’s plan to issue municipal bonds, or Jakarta Bonds, to support the financing of urban infrastructure development.

Zohran also welcomed the plan and offered to facilitate a knowledge exchange between New York and Jakarta’s finance teams. According to him, New York has also used bonds to finance infrastructure development, including waste management facilities and various public amenities.

“I am very enthusiastic about and supportive of Jakarta’s plan to issue municipal bonds. We are ready to send our finance team to share our experience with the Jakarta Provincial Government regarding the preparation and issuance process for municipal bonds,” he said.

Besides serving as an opportunity to exchange experiences, the bilateral meeting is also expected to open up opportunities for more concrete cooperation in urban development.
