Indonesia-Netherlands to Co-Host UN Peacekeeping Ministerial 2027

RRI.CO.ID, New York - Indonesia and the Netherlands have officially become co-hosts of the 2027 UN Peacekeeping Ministerial (UNPM), which will be held in Jakarta in the fourth quarter of 2027. According to a statement from Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday, September 19, 2026, the handover of the host role for UNPM 2027 took place during a meeting of the Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on September 17, 2026.

The meeting was attended by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, who hosted UNPM 2025, Indonesia’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Umar Hadi, and the Netherlands’ Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Lise Gregoire-van Haaren.

It was also attended by Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix, Under-Secretary-General for Operational Support Atul Khare, and Under-Secretary-General for Management Strategy, Policy and Compliance Catherine Pollard.

Indonesia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Umar Hadi, said the joint leadership of Indonesia and the Netherlands in hosting UNPM 2027 is expected to strengthen political support and international cooperation to ensure the effectiveness of UN peacekeeping operations.

“Through this joint leadership, Indonesia seeks to mobilize political support, promote inclusive international cooperation, and ensure that UN peacekeeping operations remain effective, responsive, and adequately resourced,” he said.

UNPM 2027 will mark the first time Indonesia hosts the ministerial-level forum on UN peacekeeping operations.

As one of the major contributors to UN peacekeeping missions, Indonesia has deployed more than 60,000 personnel to various peacekeeping missions since it first contributed troops through the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) in Sinai, Egypt, in 1957.

Indonesia’s commitment to UN peacekeeping continues despite the risks involved in such missions. In March-April 2026, four Indonesian peacekeepers serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) were killed in a series of incidents in Lebanon.

Amid increasingly complex international challenges, UN peacekeepers continue to play an important role in maintaining global peace and security. Strengthening peacekeeping operations also needs to go hand in hand with political solutions and post-conflict peacebuilding.

The hosting of UNPM 2027 in Jakarta is expected to provide an opportunity for Indonesia to promote political commitments and joint solutions to address challenges facing UN peacekeeping.

The forum will also strengthen cooperation among UN member states, troop-contributing countries, and the United Nations.
