President Prabowo Calls for UN Reform at BRICS Summit

RRI.CO.ID, New Delhi - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto called for reforming the United Nations (UN) at the 2026 BRICS Summit in New Delhi, India, on Saturday, September 12, 2026. His call is the latest in a growing push for reform in the world's largest intergovernmental organization.

In front of leaders from nine other member countries, Prabowo expressed his belief that all the world countries, especially BRICS members, can build a stronger multilateral system that supports the needs and the interests of all nations regardless of their size and condition. Thus, as he said, the UN should be placed at the most important element of the system.

"Together, we can build a stronger multilateral system that supports the needs and the interests of all nations, big and strong, big and small, strong or weak," he said, in a video published by the Indonesian Presidential Secretariat.

"For this to succeed, we must keep the United Nations at the center of that system, because the United Nations remains the only multilateral institution where all nations come together as equals," he continued.

Prabowo later said the UN should be reformed to make the organization more effective in creating a stronger system. He said the UN should be more representative and more responsive.

"And for the UN to be at the center effectively, it must be reformed. The UN has to be more representative, more responsive, and better able to deliver concrete results for our peoples," he said.

The secretariat said Prabowo also calls for mobilizing the collective strength of BRICS countries, representing more than a quarter of the global economy and nearly half the world's population. By strengthening BRICS and reforming global governance, he is pushing for a fairer, more equitable international order that recognizes the power of the Global South, as well as provides space for all nations to determine and finance their own future.

Although the call was not elaborated on in detail, it is the latest in a series of calls to reform the existing system at the United Nations. One of the reforms frequently proposed in the past has been to change the composition of the UN Security Council.

As one of the UN's six principal organs, the UN Security Council has authority to establish peacekeeping operations, authorize military action, and impose international sanctions. However, the council has recently been criticized for its five permanent members, all of whom are the victors of World War II: China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Another reform proposal is to relocate the headquarters of the UN Secretariat, which is currently based in New York City, United States, to another location considered more neutral. There have also been calls to establish a parliamentary assembly within the UN, whose members would be elected by the people, similar to parliamentary elections in various countries.
