FM Ensures Assistance for Indonesian Worker Killed in Workplace Accident

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that an Indonesian citizen identified by the initials IK, from Purworejo, Central Java, died in a workplace accident in Ootake City, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan, on September 2, 2026.

Director for the Protection of Indonesian Citizens at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Heni Hamidah said the victim was a residence permit holder under Japan’s Technical Intern Training Program (TITP) and had been participating in the internship program since June 2024.

“The victim was involved in an accident after being trapped in a paint-making machine,” Heni said in a statement on Friday, September 4, 2026.

Heni said the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo and the Indonesian Consulate General in Osaka had been coordinating closely with the Ootake City Police, Hiroshima Prefecture, and other relevant authorities. She said the investigation was still underway to determine the chronology and factors that led to the workplace accident.

“IK’s remains have been transported from Hiroshima to Tokyo in preparation for repatriation to Indonesia,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Through the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo and the Indonesian Consulate General in Osaka, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues to coordinate with the Ministry of Manpower, Ootake Police, the receiving organization, and other relevant parties.

“The coordination is aimed at ensuring that the entire handling process proceeds properly, including the fulfillment of the deceased’s rights in accordance with applicable regulations,” Heni said.

Earlier reports said an Indonesian citizen participating in a technical training program died in a workplace accident at a factory in Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan, on Wednesday, September 2, 2026. According to authorities, an emergency call was received at around 10:20 p.m. local time.
