RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Jakarta is positioning itself as more than just Indonesia’s capital but is also actively shaping its identity as a global city through creative diplomacy and international partnerships.
The provincial administration is strengthening sister city cooperation with several U.S. cities, aiming to broaden networks in education, culture, and the creative economy while showcasing Jakarta’s role on the world stage.
During a meeting with Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung, Indonesia’s Ambassador to the United States Indroyono Soesilo emphasized that sister city collaborations are not only about diplomacy but also about building competitive advantages in trade, education, and creative industries.
Among the key initiatives discussed were the development of an Indonesia Center in New York, scholarship programs for Jakarta’s youth to pursue postgraduate studies in leading U.S. universities, and opportunities to host international musicians and film productions in Jakarta.
“Jakarta has strong potential to become a global city,” said Ambassador Indroyono, on Monday, August 31, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
Jakarta’s partnership with Los Angeles has already expanded into areas such as sustainable transport, with cooperation between TransJakarta and the Los Angeles city administration. This collaboration will be highlighted when Governor Pramono meets Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass at the Urban 20 (U20) forum, part of the G20 meetings in New York later this month.
Jakarta is also exploring ties with Arkansas and advancing plans for a sister city agreement with New York, which would further strengthen its presence in U.S. urban networks.
Beyond diplomacy, Jakarta is leveraging the creative economy to enhance its global appeal. The city is opening doors for international performers such as BTS, The Weeknd, Guns N’ Roses, and Metallica, recognizing that major concerts not only boost tourism but also elevate Jakarta’s image as a cultural hub.
Discussions with the Motion Picture Association also point to Jakarta’s ambition to become a location for international film production, reinforcing its role in the global entertainment industry.
Through these initiatives, Jakarta is expanding its role from a national administrative center into a hub of urban diplomacy, international education, and creative economy development, signaling its determination to stand alongside other world cities in shaping global cultural and economic exchanges. ***
