Indonesia, Morocco to Finalize Trade Deal by 2027

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta — The Indonesian government is pushing to accelerate negotiations for the Indonesia-Morocco Trade Agreement, targeting the comprehensive completion of the deal by 2027. This strategic step was taken to expand national market access and strengthen global supply chain integration across Africa and Southeast Asia.

This commitment was reaffirmed by Indonesian Vice Minister of Trade Dyah Roro Esti Widya Putri during a virtual meeting with the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs for Foreign Trade of the Kingdom of Morocco, Omar Hejira, on Thursday, August 27, 2026. Reactivating these negotiations is considered crucial for creating legal certainty and a more favorable business climate for both countries.

The framework being built focuses on creating a realistic timetable, continuing negotiations based on existing draft texts, and setting balanced market access goals. Indonesia believes this momentum must be optimized to turn strong diplomatic ties into tangible economic potential.

“Indonesia is ready to work constructively with Morocco to accelerate this negotiation process. This momentum should be seen as an opportunity for both countries to turn strong political relations into real and sustainable economic benefits,” Roro said.

The government identified several key national commodities—such as anhydrous ammonia, crude palm oil (CPO) and its derivatives, semi-finished iron and steel, and frozen shrimp—that hold significant potential for expanding export penetration in Morocco. Geoeconomically, Morocco is positioned as a primary gateway for Indonesian products entering African, European, and Mediterranean markets.

“Indonesia has significant unrealized export potential to Morocco for products such as anhydrous ammonia, crude and processed palm oil, semi-finished iron and steel, and frozen shrimp. Additionally, Morocco plays an important role in supplying strategic products to Indonesia, including fertilizers and aluminum,” she added.

This bilateral cooperation has shown a positive trend, with total Indonesia-Morocco trade reaching US$ 235 million in 2025, a 33 percent jump from the previous year. The formation of a joint task force is expected to further accelerate the realization of trade agreements to support economic growth on both sides.
