RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – The visit of Timor-Leste President José Ramos-Horta to Jakarta on Friday, August 28, 2026, carried a distinctive dimension as he was accompanied by a delegation of around 20 figures, including a Nobel laureate, following a science conference in Dili earlier that week.
Deputy Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir explained that the delegation’s arrival at the Presidential Palace was primarily a courtesy call to President Prabowo Subianto.

“President Ramos Horta brought about 20 delegates, including a Nobel laureate, after attending a science meeting in Timor-Leste from August 24–26. This was simply a courtesy call to President Prabowo,” he told reporters at the palace complex on Friday, as quoted by Antara.
Arrmanatha noted that the delegation included peace advocates, scientists, and chemists among the Nobel recipients. Beyond the palace meeting, President Ramos Horta and several Nobel and Turing Award laureates were also scheduled to hold a dialogue with former Indonesian President Megawati Soekarnoputri at the Megawati Institute in Menteng, Central Jakarta.
According to the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) Secretary-General Hasto Kristiyanto, the discussion would focus on the advancement of science and technology and its implications for humanity.
Among those present were Timor-Leste’s Ambassador to Indonesia Roberto Sarmento de Oliveira Soares, Nobel Prize-winning economist Robert C. Merton (1997) and his wife Anita Merton, as well as Bambang Kesowo, a member of the advisory board of Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). ***
