RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Russia has expressed respect for Indonesia’s decision to join the Board of Peace (BoP), an initiative launched by U.S. President Donald Trump. The statement was delivered by Russian Ambassador to Indonesia, Sergei Tolchenov, during a press conference in Jakarta on Thursday, February 26, 2026.
Tolchenov said Moscow understands Indonesia’s reasons for joining the BoP, as outlined by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Foreign Minister Sugiono. He noted that the move reflects Indonesia’s commitment to protecting the Palestinian people.
“We understand that Indonesia wants to safeguard the Palestinian people. President Prabowo and Foreign Minister Sugiono emphasized that Indonesia continues to support the so-called Two-State Solution for Palestine and the Middle East, along with all related issues,” Tolchenov remarked at the event, which coincided with a Ramadan iftar gathering, as reported by Antara.
Tolchenov also revealed that Russia abstained from voting on UN Security Council Resolution 2803, which established the BoP. Despite this, he stressed that Russia remains committed to playing a role in the Middle East peace process, supporting efforts to resolve the Palestinian–Israeli conflict. He reiterated that Russia recognizes and supports the establishment of a Palestinian state.
In addition, Tolchenov highlighted the creation of the International Stabilization Force (ISF), which he said aims to promote peace in Gaza, particularly by facilitating humanitarian aid. He explained that Russia is pursuing similar efforts through bilateral channels, engaging directly with Palestinian leaders.
“We are engaged in this process, though perhaps separately. The BoP is there, Russia is here. But ultimately, the most important goal is the same: achieving two states in the Middle East - Israel and Palestine,” he affirmed.
Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya explained that the BoP’s primary mandate is to oversee the ceasefire in Gaza. The body is also tasked with maintaining security stability and guiding reconstruction efforts during the post-conflict transition.
Indonesia’s formal participation in the BoP, he said, reflects its commitment to fostering sustainable peace in Gaza. Teddy emphasized that the BoP’s role is focused on strengthening security conditions on the ground and ensuring that recovery efforts proceed in line with international agreements.
“The Board of Peace is mandated to monitor the ceasefire, stabilize security, and oversee Gaza’s reconstruction process,” Teddy told reporters on January 23, 2026.
