Indonesia Expresses Condolences over Flash Floods on China-Nepal Border

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta — The Indonesian Government has expressed its deepest condolences over the flash floods that struck the Jirong area along the China-Nepal border, causing fatalities, injuries, and damage to public infrastructure. Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, Vahd Nabyl Mulachela, said preliminary information indicated that the disaster had killed at least 90 people in the two border areas, while hundreds of others remained missing.

“Indonesia extends its condolences and sympathy to the people and governments of Nepal and China and fully supports the ongoing rescue and post-disaster response efforts so that they can proceed smoothly and effectively,” Nabyl said in a statement on Thursday, August 27, 2026.

Regarding the condition of Indonesian citizens (WNI), Nabyl said the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Beijing and the Indonesian Embassy in Dhaka continued to actively monitor the situation in coordination with Indonesian community networks and the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Indonesia in Kathmandu.

Nabyl confirmed that, so far, there had been no reports of Indonesian citizens affected by the disaster. There are around 45 Indonesian citizens in Nepal, most of whom reside in Kathmandu and work in the hospitality sector.

“So far, there have been no reports of Indonesian citizens affected by the disaster,” he said.

He said particular attention was being given to Indonesian citizens in Nepal who were traveling for tourism and trekking. To support protection and monitoring efforts, the Indonesian Embassy in Dhaka had urged travel agencies bringing Indonesian citizens to Nepal to immediately report the whereabouts and condition of Indonesian travelers, particularly those undertaking trekking trips.

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, along with the Indonesian Embassies in Beijing and Dhaka, also urged all Indonesian citizens in affected areas to remain vigilant and follow instructions from local authorities.

“Indonesian citizens who are in an emergency situation are urged to contact the hotline numbers of the Indonesian Embassies in Beijing or Dhaka through the contact details available on the official channels of each Indonesian diplomatic mission,” Nabyl said.
