KJRI Penang Urges Caution After Attacks in Southern Thailand

RRI.CO.ID, Melaka, Malaysia - The Indonesian Consulate General (KJRI) in Penang has urged Indonesian citizens in Penang, Kedah, and Perlis, Malaysia, to heighten vigilance following 51 violent incidents in three southern provinces of Thailand on August 22–23, 2026.
In a statement issued in Melaka on Monday, August 24, 2026, KJRI Penang advised Indonesians to temporarily avoid travel to Pattani, Narathiwat, and Yala, and to closely monitor official updates and reliable security information.
“KJRI Penang calls on Indonesians to prioritize the safety of themselves and their families by remaining cautious and following the guidance of local authorities,” the advisory said.
Indonesians in need of assistance were encouraged to contact the Indonesian Consulate in Songkhla, Thailand, or KJRI Penang.
According to reports, the series of attacks--suspected to be carried out by separatist groups--included bombings, arson targeting government offices and vehicles, the destruction of telecommunications towers, and tire burnings on several roads.
Of the 51 incidents, 22 occurred in Narathiwat, 18 in Yala, and 11 in Pattani. Thai authorities have since imposed a curfew in Narathiwat and heightened security measures across all three provinces.
